Tom Smith is a New York based visual artist working in multiple disciplines from painting, sculpture, installation and video art. His practice explores abstraction through process and experimentation. Tom creates a surreal world in his works through his exploration of light, space and color and is especially interested in the ways our perceptions are influenced by TV, the Internet and film. His inspiration comes through an analogue process focused and influenced by our digital world.

Smith received a BFA from MICA in Baltimore in 2006 and an MFA from The School of Visual Arts, New York in 2008. His paintings and installations have been exhibited in New York City and internationally in Australia, Brazil, France, Ireland and Taiwan.

In 2012 Smith created his drag alter-ego, Tamala. A retro-future muse that the artist uses to personify a surreal created world within his art. Through Tamala, Tom learned how to sew and construct clothing, how to work with makeup as well as shoot and direct videos.

Since her invention Tamala co-created DragOn - an annual drag and costume ball that benefits LGBTQ+ related charities in New York.
